Artist's statement
Just as children often see living objects in things, I too build my paintings from objects that personify and symbolize emotions, behaviors or desires in my worldview. Most of all, I'm fascinated by all the unnecessary, cute things we buy as adults to ward off the feeling of sadness. To me, their depiction is a symbol of a superficial way of thinking.
This superficiality is my central theme. It fascinates me that people are afraid to look for the real essence of things and prefer to stay in comfortable schemes. Too often we look for simple solutions. And that is exactly what my paintings do not offer. On the contrary, they are full. Full of symbols, hidden stories, strange relationships and makes you question. I force the viewer to look at a picture where nothing is as it seems. There is something disturbingly complicated to uncover. It is an image that - paradoxically - does not soothe, despite all the beautiful things that are depicted on it.
Visually, I try to work with the image abstractly, although I depict realistically. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. I manipulate scenes like a collage and always consider not only what to paint, but also where and how. I hate trendy image reduction. Enrichment gives many more possibilities to work with the work.
And so I try to create my own artistic "language", because none of those that exist do not quite fit my words.
